”In Our Mind’s Eye”
In Our Mind’s Eye is an audiovisual installation that arose from the fascination for what lies beyond the boundaries of our perception and which explores the idea that most of reality only takes place in our head.
Ben Kreukniet’s work consists of two parts: the audiovisual installation inside de Bijenkorf and a light composition in the shop window. In combination, they invite the viewer to experience both fleeting observation and intense physical experience.
Light and sound of the installation in the store fill up the entire space. A scientific instrument that looks beyond the boundaries of our sensory perception has been created out of a series of discarded lights and speakers. The sculpture in the window marks the underlying mechanism of the installation, while keeping viewers at a distance at the same time.
Ben Kreukniet: “The fact that Einstein is considered to be one of the greatest mathematicians ever is not because of his skills with numbers, but because of his unlimited imagination. How can technology help us look beyond the limits of our senses? And how does this subsequently influence the relationship with our environment and each other?”
