To celebrate the 150-year anniversary of the Bijenkorf, Myrto created a series of paintings inspired by the special moments of the shopping mall’s timeline. In my research, she discovered that its history still echoes in the endless array of posters that were skillfully crafted to communicate de Bijenkorf’s new lines of products, as well as its character and position within the Dutch culture. With the passing of time, these posters do not just reflect the aesthetics of a shopping mall, but of entire generations. As a painter, she is thrilled to add another pebble to this trail of pictorial history and to create new images and narratives that will inhabit the window display of the infamous shopping mall. With gestural boldness and colorful abstraction, she strives to communicate to the viewer what the posters have communicated in the past. Through my painterly expression, she translates images of the past to a language that encapsulates my generation’s dynamism. Because 2020’s mark will surely be indelible!
