Passing By
100+ years Damrak, Amsterdam
Studio Job, Joris & Marieke are intrigued by the legendary status of the shop windows of de Bijenkorf. In the past, people from all over the Netherlands came to Amsterdam to view the famous fittings of the shop windows. Even artworks by Karel Appel were on show at the window before they were seen in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
They were wondering what was happening on the other side of the windows at that time. What kind of people came to have a look? How did the shopping public and the street scene change over the years? They came up with the idea to make a short film that illustrates the history of the Damrak seen from the inside of the shop window of de Bijenkorf.
They started an investigation into the history of the Damrak. How did the facades change during the years? Which trams and cars were driven on the streets? From when was it forbidden to park on the Damrak? When did the women wear petticoats and when was the time of the miniskirts? Which popular youth cultures were there and which tracksuit is the most typical of the gabbers?
In addition, it was an interesting puzzle to let the main character move smoothly as he jumped through different times and changed his identity.
The result is ‘Passing By’ in which the viewer has rushed along in more than a hundred years Damrak.
