GILL BUTTON
Eye Of The Day – Mata Hari
In Room on the Roof Gill Button worked on her new project Eye Of The Day, Mata Hari. “Through the creation of these ink pieces, I wanted to look beyond the costume, the jewels and glamour – to feel the woman behind it and discover a sense of why her difficult, and often tumultuous life, would cause Margaretha Zelle from Leeuwarden to run away to Paris and recreate herself as Mata Hari. With 2017 marking the centenary of her execution, my fascination continues.”. From 13 March till 3 June the beautiful works of Gill Button are exhibited in the central stairwell of de Bijenkorf Amsterdam. These unique portraits are for sale, at the customer service you can reserve a portrait of interest. Privilege Members receive a set of Gill Button cards with a purchase of an item on the designer departments during the Privilege Member Weekend on 25 and 26 March.
Biography Gill Button
British illustrator Gill Button has Instagram to thank for her fame. Through the social media channel she was discovered by designer Dries van Noten, fashion house Gucci and department store De Bijenkorf, where she spent two weeks painting in the Room on the Roof. Paper and ink are the most important things in the world for Gill Button. To illustrate why, she opens a portfolio case full of night-blue, watery faces. These expressive faces have grown out to be her trademark over the last three years. Button’s illustrations are done in a playful, painterly hand that makes the visages, coifs, and poses of high fashion both intimate and accessible. Fashion portraits are at once confrontational and cool, intimate and vulnerable.
